India Wins 55 Medals at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games 2024
India's Deaf athletes made a historic achievement at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games 2024, winning 55 medals and ranking 5th overall, with PM Modi praising their performance.
The 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games 2024, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1st to 8th December, saw an impressive performance by India’s Deaf athletes. A total of 68 athletes from India participated in the tournament, competing against teams from 21 countries.
India finished with an incredible 55 medals at the games – 8 gold, 18 silver, and 29 bronze – marking a historic achievement for the country. This is the highest-ever number of medals won by India in the Asia Pacific Deaf Games.
The Indian contingent had standout performances across several sports:
- Badminton: 6 medals – 3 silver and 3 bronze
- Chess: 3 medals – 1 silver and 2 bronze
- Judo: 7 medals – 2 gold and 5 bronze
- Table Tennis: 3 medals – 1 silver and 2 bronze
- Wrestling: 8 medals – 1 gold, 1 silver, and 6 bronze
With these outstanding performances, India ranked 5th overall in the tournament. This marks a major improvement compared to the last Asia Pacific Deaf Games in 2015, where India won only 5 medals (3 gold and 2 silver). The 2019 edition of the games was cancelled due to political unrest in Hong Kong.
The athletes' success is a result of their hard work and preparation. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) organized specialized training camps for the athletes at various locations, including Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, SAI NCOE Sonepat, and SAI Regional Centre in Lucknow. SAI also provided financial support for travel and accommodation in Malaysia.
On 10th December 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian athletes for their “historic achievement” on X (formerly Twitter). He praised their efforts, calling it India’s best-ever performance at the games, and said their victory has inspired the entire country, especially sports enthusiasts.
