Government Allows Research on Cannabis

In a first, the Indian government has legalised the cultivation of cannabis for study and research. This research will focus on finding and developing its medicinal properties.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation proposed to change laws related to Cannabis because there have been a lot of research that prove weed has many medicinal uses.  A number of countries have also moved to legalise the sale of the drug for medicinal purposes. Even ancient times in India, cannabis was known as a sacred plant, but it was banned due to drug abuse. The Indian Government had banned growing, selling possessing weed. Research about Weed was also never done. Now the Union Ministry’s Narcotic Department has allowed a Research and Development project on chemicals such as CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) that are found in weed.

The chemical THC is responsible for the psychoactive nature of weed. High levels of THC is responsible for elevated moods. However weed with low THC content can be used for medicinal purposes. The chemical CBD is used to treat pain, insomnia, stress, cancer, etc. Last year the government was even talking about approving weed for medicinal purposes. If used correctly, there are many uses. Many organisations are already working on weed that will help cancer patients reduce their pain. Now weed will be grown will be grown in a monitored way, at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. And research regarding its medicinal properties will be carried out.
