Golden Globes 2026: Hollywood Speaks Out Against the U.S. Government
The 83rd Golden Globe Awards became a platform for political protest over ICE actions. Celebrities used their visibility to demand justice and accountability.
The Golden Globe Awards are one of the most watched award ceremonies in the world, celebrating excellence in films, television series, and entertainment.
The 83rd Golden Globe Awards were held on 11 January 2026 in Beverly Hills, California. This year, the event trended widely on social media not only for winners and fashion but also for strong political messages shared by celebrities.
The ceremony took place during a period of high political tension in the United States, especially over immigration enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Many people have also raised questions about U.S. foreign policy, including actions related to Venezuela.
A major focus was the death of Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three from Minneapolis. She was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation on 7 January. Good was a U.S. citizen, and her death led to nationwide protests demanding accountability.
Following the incident, advocacy groups and the ACLU launched the #BeGood campaign, calling for compassion, social justice, and changes in enforcement practices.
At the Golden Globes, several celebrities wore black-and-white pins reading “BE GOOD” and “ICE OUT” on the red carpet. Actors Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, Jean Smart, and Ariana Grande were among those showing support.
Mark Ruffalo strongly criticised leadership and said the situation in the country was not normal. Other celebrities also urged people not to stay silent.
The host, Nikki Glaser, later said she removed some political jokes out of sensitivity. The White House responded critically to Ruffalo’s remarks.
The event highlighted growing political unrest and public protest.
