Did Your Electricity Bill Rise Suddenly? Here’s Why!
Millions of Indians faced higher electricity bills in 2026 due to smart meter issues, increased charges, rising power costs, and record summer heat.
Many people across India noticed a sharp increase in their electricity bills during April, May and June 2026. In several cases, consumers said their bills had doubled or even tripled despite using the same appliances and following the same daily routine.
However, the reasons behind the increase were different in different states.
In Maharashtra, thousands of consumers, especially from Mumbai and other areas, complained about unusually high electricity bills. Some people who did not even use air conditioners received very high bills. In one case, a man with a monthly income of ?14,000 reportedly received an electricity bill of ?17,000.
After receiving several complaints, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) started special camps to check bills and address consumer concerns. According to MSEDCL, the rise was mainly due to more accurate readings from smart meters, electricity leakages or wiring problems in some homes, and higher usage during the summer season.
However, many consumers claimed that their electricity usage had not increased and questioned why their bills were so high.
In Uttar Pradesh, the issue was different. The electricity department increased the approved electricity limit, also known as the sanctioned load, for around 46.7 lakh consumers without informing them. A higher sanctioned load increases the fixed charges in electricity bills, meaning consumers may have to pay more even if their actual usage remains the same.
Reports also stated that around 5.97 lakh consumers faced extra charges due to smart meter-related issues, though only a small number of people received refunds.
In Delhi, the increase was linked to the rising cost of buying electricity. During the extreme summer heat, the demand for electricity increased as more people used air conditioners, coolers and fans. Electricity companies had to purchase additional power at higher prices, and some of these costs were passed on to consumers.
Experts say there is no single reason behind the rise in electricity bills across India. While Maharashtra faced issues related to smart meters, Uttar Pradesh saw problems linked to increased sanctioned load, and Delhi was affected by higher power purchase costs. The record-breaking summer heat also increased electricity demand across the country, adding to the problem.
