Dharmendra Life Story: Goodbye To Bollywood's 'He-Man'

Dharmendra, one of Bollywood’s greatest actors, passed away at 89, leaving behind a legacy of over 300 films and a remarkable life story.

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most iconic stars, passed away on 24 November 2025 at the age of 89 at his Mumbai home, just 12 days after being discharged from Breach Candy Hospital.

Born on 8 December 1935 in Nasrali, Punjab, Dharmendra made his film debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Over a career of more than 60 years and 300 films, he delivered unforgettable performances in Phool Aur Pathar, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Sholay and many more. He earned the title of Bollywood’s original “He-Man” and received the Padma Bhushan in 2012.

Dharmendra’s personal life remained in public attention for decades. He married Prakash Kaur in 1954, long before joining films. They had four children: Sunny, Vijeta, Ajeeta and Bobby. Prakash chose a quiet life away from fame and supported the family while he built his acting career.

In the 1970s, Dharmendra and Hema Malini starred together in many films. Their on-screen chemistry soon became real. During the shooting of Sholay, Dharmendra even paid spot boys to delay shots so he could spend more time with her. In 1980, while still married to Prakash, he married Hema Malini. Their marriage created major controversy and media attention. They later had two daughters — Esha and Ahana.

Prakash Kaur remained dignified through all the headlines, raising her children and supporting the family. Dharmendra managed two separate households, and both families created their own arrangements over the years.

Today, his legacy continues through his children and grandchildren. His life was a story of great success, complex relationships, and strong family bonds.
