Delhi Woman Blackmailed After Giving Her Phone for Screen Repair

Many women across Indian cities are being blackmailed after giving their phones for repair, as technicians steal private data and demand money.

A shocking case has come to light from Delhi. In June 2025, a young woman gave her phone for screen repair at a mobile shop in Karol Bagh. Like many people, she shared her password with the technician, thinking he will just fix the phone.

But after three days, she got a scary blackmail call. The caller was the same technician. He had opened her personal files and private photos from her phone. He threatened to leak them unless she paid him money.

She complained to the police and was shocked to know she was not the only victim. Police found 350 other women in Delhi who were cheated like this.

This problem is growing in other cities too. In Navi Mumbai, a man made fake apps to steal people’s data. In Pune, police caught a gang using phones given for repair to steal personal data. In Bengaluru, a hacker was caught blackmailing people after stealing private information from apps.

Police are now warning everyone, especially women, to be very careful when giving phones for repair.

Simple Tips to Stay Safe:
- Do not share phone passwords unless necessary.
- Use Guest Mode or Second Space on your phone.
- Delete private files before repair.
- Use App Locks to protect WhatsApp, Gallery, Instagram, etc.
- Ask for a proper receipt when you give your phone.
- If you get any blackmail call, stay calm and collect proof. Then complain to the police or at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

Police said, “Your phone is like your personal diary. Always protect your data.”

Next time you give your phone for repair, remember to protect your privacy first.
