A 14-year-old Deaf girl from the Hakki Pakki community was found dead with severe injuries near a railway track in Bidadi, Ramanagara district, on 12th May. The incident has sparked outrage among villagers, who protested demanding justice and better safety measures in the area.

What Happened?

The girl, a Class 8 student, stayed at a government hostel in Bengaluru but had returned to her native village for summer vacation. She was raised by a single mother, and all her siblings are also differently-abled.

On the day of the incident, she attended a birthday party at a neighbour’s house but did not return home even by 10 PM. After a frantic search, her family filed a missing complaint with the police. Later, her semi-nude body with multiple injuries was found near the railway tracks.

Post-Mortem & Investigation

The police registered a case, and the post-mortem was conducted at Rajarajeshwari Medical College in Bengaluru. While the exact cause of death is awaited, villagers allege she was raped and murdered.

Ramanagara SP R Srinivas Gowda has formed three special teams to investigate the case. Police have detained 4-5 suspects, including a man from the victim’s village, after reviewing CCTV footage.

Villagers Protest, Demand Justice

On 14th May, angry villagers protested, refusing to conduct the last rites until the culprits were arrested. They highlighted poor street lighting, lack of police patrolling, and the presence of drug users in the area.

Officials, including Karnataka SC/ST Nomadic Development Corporation Chairperson Pallavi G and Greater Bengaluru Development Authority Chairman G N Nataraj, visited the protest site. They spoke to the family and convinced them to perform the last rites.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also met the family. The district administration provided ?4.12 lakh as compensation, while the local panchayat gave ?50,000.

The police are investigating the case thoroughly. Villagers continue to demand better safety measures, including street lights and regular police checks, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
