Deaf Boy Stuck in a 70 Feet Deep Borewell?

In an extremely shocking incident which has been reported from Chhattisgarh a 11 year old boy named Rahul Sahu has fallen in a 70 feet deep borewell.

A borewell is a well — 100 to 1500 ft deep — in which a PVC pipe of diameter 6 to 12 inches is used to extract groundwater for irrigation purposes. After a borewell goes dry, farmers abandon it after taking out the water pump, and pulling out the PVC pipe to the extent possible for re-use. The guidelines to cover these borewells are not strictly implemented. Also, farmers think that they pose little risk as only adults work in the fields. However there have been many cases of children falling and getting trapped in such borewells. In an extremely shocking incident from Chhattisgarh a 11 year old boy named Rahul Sahu has fallen in a 70 feet deep borewell and is stuck there for almost three days now. The borewell was in his home backyard. The 11 year old boy fell into the unused borewell located in the backyard of his house in Pihrid village of Chhattisgarh at around 2 pm on Friday, 10th June while he was playing there. Hindustan Times said that the boy is Deaf but some news companies say that Rahul Sahu is a Deaf but some say he is hearing. There is no clarity on this yet.

The rescue operation, which began at 4 pm on Friday, 10th June is still underway. Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) assisted by district administration and police personnel are working on the rescue mission. Around 500 people are involved in the rescue operations. Some specialists from the Army are also there. Rahul Sahu is still conscious and responding. A team of doctors and authorities have been constantly monitoring his condition through cameras. The child was provided bananas and biscuits, while a pipe has been installed for oxygen supply. Even a team of robot specialists from Gujarat has reached the spot, however the robot team failed to bring the child out of the borewell. According to Hindustan Times, the robot failed to rescue the boy as the boy was not responding to instructions given by experts. HT said since the boy he has had problems communicating.

This is why rescuers have dug a 50-feet parallel pit with the help of JCB and poclain machines. After digging for about 60 to 65 feet a horizontal tunnel will be created to evacuate the child. Rahul's family members and villagers were seen offering prayers for his safety. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has directed the safe rescue of the little boy and has also instructed all district collectors and SPs that in order to prevent such incidents, all borewells should be covered.
