D. Gukesh: The Young Chess Champion Who Defeated Magnus Carlsen
18-year-old Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh stunned the world by defeating World No.1 Magnus Carlsen at the Norway Chess 2025.
D. Gukesh, a 19-year-old from Chennai, has shocked the chess world by defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a classical match at the Norway Chess tournament on 2 June 2025. While Carlsen slammed the table in frustration, Gukesh stayed calm, smiled quietly, and walked away. His cool behaviour and sharp mind have impressed everyone.
Born on 29 May 2006, Gukesh comes from a Telugu-speaking family in Andhra Pradesh. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ENT doctor, and his mother, Dr. Padmakumari, is a microbiologist. Gukesh started playing chess at the age of 7. His parents noticed his talent early and made many sacrifices to support him. His father even reduced his medical work to travel with him, while his mother worked extra hours to pay for coaching.
Gukesh began learning chess from Mr. Bhaskar at Velammal Vidyalaya in Chennai. Instead of using computer tools like many others, Gukesh preferred the old-school method—reading, thinking, and studying games deeply. His father never forced him but always supported his choices and stood by him emotionally.
In 2019, Gukesh became India’s youngest Grandmaster. In 2024, he made history by becoming the youngest World Chess Champion. Now, after beating Carlsen, he has proved that he belongs among the world’s best. His quiet confidence, strong discipline, and family support have made him a true champion.
Chess legend Viswanathan Anand has praised Gukesh and said he’s proud of him. At just 19, Gukesh is inspiring young players around the world and showing that India has a new star on the global chess stage.
