Early on Saturday, 4th October 2025, around 1:30 to 2:00 am, a Durga Puja procession was moving through the old city area near Dargah Bazar and Haathi Pokhari in Cuttack. That’s when the trouble began.

Some local residents objected to the loud music being played late at night. When the procession passed the area, an argument started between members of the procession and local people. This small argument soon turned into a violent clash.

People started throwing stones, and some stalls and two-wheelers were damaged. A few small fires were also set. Police rushed to the spot to control the situation. Reports say several people, including police officers, were injured.

After the first clash, fresh incidents of violence and arson were reported the next day in nearby areas. Shops and small cabins were damaged or burned.

To stop rumours and control the situation, the Odisha government and local administration took quick action.

  • Internet and social media services were temporarily suspended in the Cuttack Municipal area.

  • Curfew and prohibitory orders were imposed in several police-station areas to stop people from gathering.

These steps were taken to prevent fake or angry messages from spreading on apps like WhatsApp, X, and Facebook, which could make the situation worse.

Police said that dozens of people were injured, and several arrests were made. Flag marches were held to restore peace. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, held a high-level meeting with officials and appealed to the public to maintain peace. He also said strict action will be taken against those responsible for the violence.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a 12-hour bandh (shutdown) in protest against the clashes, adding to tensions in the city. Political leaders also reacted and shared their opinions on how the situation was handled.

Officials have assured that peace will be restored soon and that law and order are under control.
