COVID-19 Cases Rise in Mumbai: Shilpa Shirodkar Tests Positive

COVID-19 cases are slowly rising again in India and some parts of Asia. Health experts are watching carefully. India has 257 active cases.

After a long break, COVID-19 cases are rising again in India, though the numbers are still low. Health experts say there is no need to panic, but we must be careful.

We all remember how in 2020, COVID-19 changed our lives. The big lockdown began in March. Roads were empty, schools closed, and people stayed indoors. Hospitals were full, and sadly, many lost their loved ones.

The second wave in 2021 was even worse. The virus spread quickly, there was a shortage of hospital beds and oxygen, and getting treatment became difficult. It was one of the toughest times India has ever seen.

What's the Situation Now?

In the past week, India has reported 164 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total active cases to 257. The highest number of cases are in:

- Kerala – 69 cases

- Maharashtra – 44 cases

- Tamil Nadu – 34 cases

In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed a few new cases since early May. Two people – a 59-year-old cancer patient and a 14-year-old girl with kidney disease – tested positive after they passed away at KEM Hospital. However, doctors say they died because of their health problems, not directly due to COVID.

The BMC has asked people to stay alert and follow basic safety steps like wearing masks in crowded places.

Actress Shilpa Shirodkar and Cricketer Travis Head Test Positive

Veteran actress Shilpa Shirodkar shared on Instagram that she tested positive for COVID-19. She is recovering at home in Mumbai and has requested everyone to “stay safe and wear your masks.”

Australian cricketer Travis Head also tested positive for COVID-19 after returning to India to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. He had to miss a match against Lucknow. The news was confirmed by coach Daniel Vettori and team captain Pat Cummins.

What’s Happening in Other Asian Countries?

India is not alone. COVID-19 cases are also going up in:

- Singapore – 30% rise in early May

- Hong Kong – From 33 weekly cases in March to over 1,000 by 10th May

- Thailand – More than 71,000 cases and 19 deaths reported this year

- China – Rise in cases due to a new variant

A new version of the virus, called JN.1, is spreading in some of these countries. Experts say this variant spreads faster but is not more dangerous than earlier ones.

What Can We Do?

Doctors and health officials suggest a few simple steps:

- Wear a mask in crowded places
- Wash your hands regularly
- Get your vaccine doses on time
- If you feel unwell, stay home and consult a doctor

The situation is not like 2020, but being careful will help protect ourselves and others.

Let’s stay safe and look out for one another.
