Congress Replaces Priyanka Gandhi in Varanasi

Priyanka Gandhi was replaced by Ajay Rai from the Varanasi constituency. She says she is okay with the decision taken by her brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

In the upcoming elections, the Narendra Modi from the BJP, will contest from the Varanasi constituency.

There has been speculation that Priyanka Gandhi from the congress would also contest elections from the same constituency.

Whenever she was asked about this, she said that the decision rested with her brother and that she was fine with his decision

Congress has now replaced Priyanka, with a local candidate Ajay Rai, as their candidate since they didn't want to risk losing the election in Varanasi, against Modi

In 2014, Ajai Rai received only close to above 75,000 votes. He too had contested from the constituency of Varanasi.

Many feel that the congress could have selected a stronger candidate to send a strong message to the ruling party.

The Samajwadi Party, and Bahujan Samaj Party have also named a local candidate Shalini Yadav.

The BJP took a chance to target the Congress over this decision. They said that they were deeply disappointed with Congress’ decision of changing the candidate from Varanasi. They said that India has changed, dynasties don’t matter.

Ragini Nayak, the spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee said that Priyanka has herself assessed the situation, and that the decision was taken without any secrecy. It was a party decision.
