Chiranjeevi Says He's Scared Ram Charan Might Have Another Daughter

Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi walked right into a major controversy after making a sexist and derogatory comment about his granddaughters.

Recently, Chiranjeevi was invited as the chief guest at the pre-release event of the upcoming Telugu comedy drama movie - .

Brahma Anandam is the story of a struggling actor seeking funding for his ambitious theatre production. When he approaches his estranged grandfather for help, the grandfather gives him an unexpected challenge to win the money. It was released on 14th February 2025.

At the event, when asked about his grandchildren, Chiranjeevi openly expressed his desire for his son, superstar Ram Charan, and his wife, Upasana Kamineni, to have a baby boy.

For those who don’t know, Chiranjeevi himself has two daughters, Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela. Both Sreeja and Sushmita also have 2 daughters each.

Ram Charan married Upasana Kamineni, the vice-chairman of Apollo Charity and Chief Editor of B Positive magazine, on 14th June 2012

The couple had their first child, a girl (daughter) - Klin Kaara Konidela on 20th June 2023.

While the couple is not pregnant again yet, Upasana said that she is ready to have her second baby during an interview in February 2024.

However, Chiranjeevi desperately wants his next grandchild to be a boy.

In his speech at Brahma Anandam’s pre-release event, Chiranjeevi playfully admitted that he was "scared" that their (Ram Charan, and Upasana’s) second child might also be a girl, and stressed his wish for a grandson to carry on the family’s name and legacy.

He jokingly said, “When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I’m a ladies’ hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around. I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, to have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye… I’m scared that he might again have a girl.”

However, his playful and jokey statement quickly sparked outrage on social media, with netizens expressing their displeasure.

One user wrote, “...In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising. PS – I have a girl, and I have heard from hundreds of people about giving birth to a boy next. It feels horrible when people want us to control things I can’t.”

Another commenter added, “... The rot runs so deep, it is not even funny. Proud to be the mother of a girl, daughters are beautiful, daughters are pure love, and they will carry your legacy forward just right.”

Some defended Chiranjeevi too.

A user commented, “There's nothing wrong with wanting a boy in a house full of girls. The problem arises when someone desires only a boy and disregards having a girl. Wanting both a boy and a girl is about balance, not bias."
