Big Win for NDA in Bihar, Nitish Kumar to Be CM for Record 10th Time

The BJP-led NDA won a massive victory in the 2025 Bihar election with 202 seats, putting Nitish Kumar on track to become Chief Minister for the 10th time.

The results of the Bihar 2025 election were announced on 14 November 2025, and the BJP-led NDA won a historic landslide victory by securing 202 out of 243 seats. The BJP became the single-largest party with 89 seats. Among its allies, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) won 85 seats, Chirag Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas) won 19 seats, and the remaining allies together won 9 seats, taking the NDA’s total to 202. On the other hand, the Mahagathbandhan (MGB), which included Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD, the Congress and other parties, could win only 35 seats. With the majority mark being 122, the NDA’s big tally clearly shows the strong support it received from the people of Bihar.

This election also saw a historic voter turnout. Around 67.13% people voted, which is the highest in Bihar since 1951. Women voters played a major role with a turnout of 71.78%. A big reason behind this support was Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recently launched Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana (MMRY), under which more than 1.4 crore women received ?10,000 each. This increased women’s support for the NDA in a big way. The NDA also used a balanced strategy by promising welfare schemes for rural areas and development projects for cities.

Meanwhile, the opposition’s unrealistic promises affected their performance. The MGB made big claims, including Tejashwi Yadav’s promise of giving one government job to every family, which many voters felt was impossible to deliver. This doubt worked against the MGB. The Congress’s “vote-chori” campaign led by Rahul Gandhi also did not make any impact, as the Congress managed to win only 6 seats.

Another surprise in this election was the complete defeat of Prashant Kishor’s new Jan Suraaj Party. Even though people had high expectations from him because of his past work as a political strategist, his party could not win even a single seat. After the results, PM Modi congratulated the NDA and the people of Bihar. He said that Jungle Raj would never return and that Bihar had voted for development. He also said that the victory in Bihar has opened the path for a future win in the 2026 West Bengal elections.

The opposition, however, raised questions about the election process. Rahul Gandhi said the result was surprising and claimed that the election was not fair. The Congress also questioned the Election Commission about the sudden increase of 3 lakh voters. The ECI explained that citizens are allowed to apply for voter registration even after the announcement of elections, which caused the increase. At the same time, Prashant Kishor’s party accused the Nitish Kumar government of using ?14,000 crore from World Bank funds to give ?10,000 to women under the MMRY scheme just before the polls, calling it an attempt to influence voters.

There was also controversy inside the RJD. Some media reports said that Tejashwi Yadav blamed his sister Rohini Acharya for the defeat. It was reported that he shouted at her and even threw a slipper at her in anger. Rohini later wrote on social media that she was quitting politics and cutting ties with her brother, though she clarified later that she was not cutting ties with the rest of her family.

Finally, Nitish Kumar is now set to create history by becoming the Chief Minister for a record 10th time. He has served as CM multiple times before, and while there are reports that the BJP might choose its own Chief Minister since it won the highest seats, there are still strong indications that Nitish Kumar may take oath once again, possibly on 19 November. More clarity is expected in the coming days.
