In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman lost her life after being trapped in an elevator for an hour, just minutes after giving birth in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the reports, the woman’s name was Akanksha Mavi and her husband is an Indian army officer named Ankush Mavi.
Akanksha was admitted to the Capital Hospital to deliver her & Ankush’s second baby on 5th December 2024.
She delivered a baby girl at around 4:55 pm.
Minutes after successful delivery, Akanksha was being shifted from the operation room theatre to the recovery room on the higher floor at around 5:30 pm when the elevator malfunctioned.
The elevator’s doors shut on Akanksha’s neck causing her neck to get trapped in the gates and resulting in a severe fracture.
Akanksha's family desperately pleaded for help, but hospital staff, including doctors, fled the scene.
Failing to get any help, Akanksha's family called the police.
Police arrived at the hospital an hour later and recovered Akanksha's body. She was rushed to another private hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Two female nurses were also trapped in the lift during the incident but were rescued by the police with minor injuries. They too fled the scene immediately after being rescued leaving Akanksha behind.
Meanwhile, Akanksha’s angry relatives vandalized the hospital’s property and other attendants transferred 13 patients to different hospitals amid the chaos.
Akanksha’s medical report revealed that she died from excessive internal bleeding, severe neck fractures, and head injuries.
Ankush has registered an FIR under BNS Section 105 - culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the hospital's owner, the treating doctor identified as Dr Kavita, and the hospital staff for failing to assist in rescuing Akanksha.
Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ashok Kataria said that the hospital’s lift’s maintenance records are under review, and assured that strict action will be taken if negligence is confirmed.
During the initial investigation, the police realised that the lift’s belt broke during the incident.
Akanksha is survived by Ankush, their elder daughter and newborn daughter.
Ankush said that their elder daughter had been eagerly awaiting a phone call from her mother, asking about her repeatedly and he doesn’t know what or how to answer her.
While no arrests have been made in the case yet, the Meerut Police continue to investigate the incident.
