Andhra Pradesh Bus Accident Leaves Many Dead After Fire Breaks Out

A head-on collision between a sleeper bus and a tipper truck in Andhra Pradesh's Markapuram triggered a devastating inferno on March 26, 2026.

At approximately 5:45 AM on March 26, 2026, a tranquil journey turned into a horrific inferno near Rayavaram village in Markapuram, Andhra Pradesh.

A private sleeper coach carrying nearly 40 passengers was struck head-on by a gravel-laden tipper truck, triggering an immediate explosion as the truck’s diesel tank ruptured upon impact. The collision occurred while most passengers were fast asleep, leaving them disoriented as thick smoke and rapid flames engulfed the vehicle within seconds.

The tragedy was compounded by the failure of safety infrastructure; the bus’s main door jammed during the crash, and the emergency exits could not be deployed in time.

While a few passengers managed to escape by shattering windows and jumping to safety, at least 14 people—many from the Nellore district—were trapped and burnt alive inside the sleeper berths. Despite the swift intervention of local villagers and three fire engines, the intensity of the blaze left the bus a charred shell before the fire could be fully contained.

In the aftermath, around 28 injured passengers were rushed to hospitals in Markapuram and Ongole, with several remaining in critical condition.

Both the state and central governments have announced compensation for the victims' families, while investigators probe potential mechanical failures or loss of driver control.

This disaster marks a grim addition to a series of recent bus fires in the Telugu states—including similar tragedies in Telangana, Kurnool, and Nandyal—raising urgent questions regarding road safety standards and the effectiveness of emergency exits in commercial long-distance travel.
