Ahmedabad Acid Attack: Woman Jailed 10 Years for Attacking Ex-Boyfriend

A court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a 42-year-old woman to 10 years in jail for throwing acid on her former partner after he ended their five-year relationship.

An acid attack that took place near Kalupur Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in January 2024 is making headlines again after a local court announced its verdict in July 2026.

In most acid attack cases in India, women are the victims. However, in this case, a 42-year-old woman was convicted for throwing acid on a man.

According to the case, 42-year-old Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara, a resident of Juhapura in Ahmedabad, used to travel regularly on a bus where 51-year-old Rakesh Brahmbhatt worked as a conductor. Over time, the two became friends, and their friendship later turned into a relationship. The relationship continued for around five years.

Later, Rakesh Brahmbhatt's wife and family came to know about the relationship. After this, he decided to end it. He stopped speaking to Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara and cut off all contact with her.

On the evening of January 27, 2024, at around 8:30 pm, Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara met Rakesh Brahmbhatt near Kalupur Railway Station, where he was on duty. She questioned him about ending the relationship and allegedly threw acid on him.

The attack caused serious injuries. Rakesh Brahmbhatt suffered burns on his eye, back and private parts. He also suffered permanent damage to his right eye, leading to reduced vision.

Following the attack, Kalupur Police registered an FIR against Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara under Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with acid attacks. She was also charged with causing grievous injuries and attacking a public servant while he was on duty, as Rakesh Brahmbhatt was working as a bus conductor at the time.

During the trial in the Ahmedabad City Civil and Sessions Court, the court ruled that the attack was not connected to Rakesh Brahmbhatt's official duty as a bus conductor. As a result, Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara was cleared of the charge of assaulting a public servant.

However, the court found her guilty under Section 326A of the IPC for carrying out the acid attack. The court also observed that the attack was pre-planned.

In July 2026, the court sentenced Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. She was also fined Rs 1 lakh. The court directed that the entire fine amount, once recovered, should be given to Rakesh Brahmbhatt as compensation.
