Afghanistan: Taliban Kill Pregnant Police Officer
Taliban militants in Afghanistan have shot dead a policewoman in Ghor province.
Since taking power on 15 August, the Taliban have been trying to portray themselves as more tolerant, but incidents of brutality and repression are still being reported in parts of Afghanistan. Human rights groups have been documenting revenge killings of women for working, studying as well as arresting and killing religious minorities. All this is happening even though the Taliban have said officially that they will not seek revenge against those who worked for the former government. Last week dozens of Afghan women held protests in Herat, Afghanistan demanding rights and female representation in the government formation after the Taliban took control of the country. Protestors were carrying banners with slogans against the exclusion of women from the country's political system. On 5 September 2021 Women started buying head and body coverings out of fear that the Taliban would hunt down and beat them up if they were seen without hijabs or burqas.
Now another shocking news has emerged from Afghanistan. On 4 September 2021, A policewoman working at a local prison named Banu Negar, was killed at her home in front of her husband and children in Firozkoh, the capital of central Ghor province. The woman was 8 months pregnant. Relatives say three gunmen arrived at the house on Saturday and searched it before tying members of the family and then shooting Banu Negar. Taliban Spokesman Zabiullah Mujaheed said, “"We are aware of the incident and I am confirming that the Taliban have not killed her, our investigation is ongoing." Details of the incident are still sketchy as many in Firozkoh fear retribution if they speak out. But three sources have told the BBC that the Taliban beat and shot Negar dead in front of her husband and children. Relatives supplied graphic images showing blood spattered on a wall in the corner of a room and a body, the face heavily disfigured.
