5 Year Old Boy Killed by Stray Dogs in Maharashtra

Dog’s are considered as human beings best friends, but in a shocking sad turn of events a 5 year old boy in Maharashtra was attacked by stray dogs after which he lost his life. The incident took place in the Dhantoli area of Nagpur, on the morning of 11th June, Saturday. The boy, Viraj Raju Jaywar, had stepped out for a walk at 6am with his elder sister Vidhi Jairwar in the nearby garden which is managed by the Nagar Parishad, when some stray dogs attacked him. While his sister tried to shoo them away, they dragged the child to a construction site, where he was later badly attacked until he stopped breathing. As soon as his sister saw this, she started screaming for help, but because of the early morning, no one was there to help. She rushed back home. The parents and a few people passing by the road rushed to the site and the bleeding child was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead, the officials said.

Following this extremely sad incident, Samir Umap who is a zila parishad member has said that they are unable to take any action on stray dogs because of the supreme court order on stray dogs.

The Supreme Court has said that “Stray dogs have the right to food, while the people has the right to feed them.” and under the current Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, no individual is allowed to remove or relocate the stray dogs. However, as far as the safety of the citizens is considered such dogs can be trained by the government to guard the locality and live peacefully with humans. Moreover, stray dogs can be vaccinated so that their bite might not lead to life threatening hazards like rabbies etc.

The government can even rescue dogs and put them up for adoption. However, the incident which took away the life of the 5 year old boy is extremely sad and the authorities should do something so that the very loving breed of animals known for their loyalty can co-exist along with human beings without threatening someone’s safety.
