4 Dead After Passengers Fall From Mumbai Local Train

4 dead, 13 injured as passengers fall off overcrowded Mumbai local train; Railways to introduce automatic doors for safety.

In a tragic accident, at least four passengers died and 13 were injured after falling off an overcrowded local train between Diva and Mumbra stations in Thane, Maharashtra. The incident occurred around 9:30 AM when two trains were crossing each other, causing bags of passengers standing on footboards to collide.

Railway officials said the guard of a Kasara-bound train alerted authorities. The injured were rushed to Kalwa and Thane Civil Hospital, with two in critical condition. Among the dead was a policeman.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and announced ?5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and up to ?2 lakh for the injured. The Railways has started an investigation.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray slammed the government, saying, "Such accidents happen daily, but no action is taken." Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray blamed the Railway Ministry, demanding accountability.

To improve safety, Indian Railways will introduce local trains with automatic doors by January 2026. The new non-AC trains will have better ventilation and allow movement between coaches to reduce crowding.

This tragedy has again raised concerns about Mumbai’s overcrowded locals. While automatic doors are a step forward, many demand faster, stronger measures.
