2-year-old Fall & Dies in Tamil Nadu Borewell

In a tragic incident, a 2-year-old got stuck in a borewell and died due to the negligence of government authorities.

In Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirappalli last week, a two-year-old, fell into a borewell. For days the baby was stuck in the borewell and died. On 25th October,  Sujith Wilson was playing near the borewell, around 600-1,000 feet deep. While playing he fell inside the borewell. On that day, when officials tried to rescue him, he was stuck at a depth of 27 feet. But on the first day they couldn’t rescue him. The next morning on Saturday, health minister Vijayabaskar said that Sujith had slipped to a depth of 88 feet.

The borewell was just 4 metres wide. To keep the child alive, oxygen was provided to him through cylinders. When they officials tried to rescue him using ropes, he kept slipping deeper into the borewell. When they failed to rescue him with the rope, he decided to dig another borewell which was next to it so they could rescue him. While they did this, Sujith’s health started getting worse. They could not hear him breathe. Officials continued to pump more oxygen in the well.

It was only on Saturday that State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) helped to rescue the boy. On Sunday, they began drilling a 110-feet-deep hole, nearly six feet away from the abandoned borewell. But they could not go deep enough as they were too many rocks underground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi hoped that he would be rescued. On 28th October a bad smell started coming from the borewell. By this everyone came to know that Sujith was no more. Sujith's body was decomposed inside the borewell, and it has now been taken out. He was brought to Pudur for cremation. All this shows that India needs to take infrastructure seriously to ensure such incidents don't repeat.
