Taking a bath in winter without hot water can be an absolutely freezing experience. To avoid that bone-chilling experience, we use a geyser, but which one should you install in your bathroom? An electric one or a gas one? Gas geysers have emerged as a cost-effective and efficient system to heat water. Gas geysers are beneficial in some ways like ideal for a big family, very quick to repair, doesn’t need electricity to run, can run on both household LPG cylinders and pipeline natural gas. However, gas geysers are absolutely unsafe. Many people make the mistake of installing gas geysers inside bathrooms or closed spaces which increases the risk of poisoning. The gas geyser depletes the Oxygen available in the closed space and starts giving out CO which gets inside the body. CO causes poisoning which can cause symptoms such as dizziness, seizures, unconsciousness, blackouts and further cause brain damage, cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure. Many people have even died due to CO poisoning. Experts say that the geyser unit should be installed outside the bathroom with just the hot water pipe going inside.

Irrespective of the life risk, if you decide to install a gas geyser, do follow these guidelines.

  • Don’t install it in a confined space like bathrooms. Install it in a space with adequate ventilation

  • Ensure that all the linking pipes are leakproof and clean

  • Place it at a height where you can switch it off easily.

  • Don’t leave it on for too long

Gas geysers are cheaper, but they are a safety hazard. An electric geyser, on the other hand, is expensive but is much safer. Recently Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) issued guidelines that people who have installed gas geysers in bathrooms should immediately stop using them. People should contact MGL for further guidance.
