In a strange incident in Kerala, about six hens in a small poultry farm in Malappuram laid eggs with green
yolks. AK Shihabudheen from Othukkungal, the owner of the farm posted photos and videos of the eggs
with green yolks on social media. Shihabudheen and his family had been seeing the eggs with green yolks
since nine months but he shared the photos and videos only recently. First, when the hen laid the egg with
green yolk, the family did not eat the eggs as they were worried if they were safe or not. So, Shihabudheen
decided to hatch some of the eggs laid by the hen. The new hens also laid green-yolk eggs.
Scientists from the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) saw the videos and visited
the farm. They collected one hen and some eggs for research. Dr S Sankaralingam, assistant professor of
the Poultry Science Department of KVASU, said that the incident was not because of any genetic changes.
The professor said, "We believe that this was due to the feed given to the birds. The hens started to lay eggs
with yellow-coloured yolks after they were fed the food given by the university." They found this after they saw
a green pigment in the fat deposits below the skin of the hens.
Sankaralingam said, "In two weeks, eggs changed colour and now the green colour of the yolks has
completely changed to yellow at his farm. The hen brought to the university also has started to slowly lay
yellow-yolked eggs. Shihabudheen had said that he has not fed anything special to the hens, but some
natural herbs that commonly grow in houses in Kerala like Kurunthotti. Maybe this herb was giving out colour
like this."
