The Mystery of 26: Why So Many Tragedies Happened on This Date
From Chernobyl and the Indian Ocean tsunami to the Mumbai attacks and Nepal floods, here are seven major tragedies that happened on the 26th — coincidence or an unlucky date?
Every year, disasters, attacks and tragedies happen around the world. But one date seems to appear again and again — the 26th. From nuclear disasters and earthquakes to terrorist attacks and floods, several major tragedies have taken place on this date. Is the number 26 really unlucky, or is it simply a strange coincidence?
Here are some of the major events that made the 26th famous for all the wrong reasons.
1. 26 April 1986 – Chernobyl Disaster
The Chernobyl disaster was one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents. It happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. During a late-night safety test, Reactor No. 4 became unstable and exploded, releasing radioactive material into the air.
Firefighters and workers rushed to the plant without fully knowing the dangers of the radiation. Some died within weeks, while thousands were later affected by radiation exposure.
The nearby city of Pripyat, home to around 49,000 people, was evacuated and remains largely abandoned.
2. 26 January 2001 – Gujarat Earthquake
On 26 January 2001, a powerful earthquake struck Gujarat, India, with its epicentre near Bhuj. The earthquake destroyed homes, buildings, roads and entire communities and was felt across large parts of India.
Around 20,000 people died, more than 1.5 lakh were injured, and around 4 lakh buildings were destroyed across Gujarat and Sindh in Pakistan.
3. 26 December 2004 – Indian Ocean Tsunami
On 26 December 2004, one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history struck the Indian Ocean. A massive undersea earthquake triggered huge tsunami waves that hit countries including India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand.
The waves destroyed homes, villages and coastal communities. Around 2.3 lakh people died or went missing.
4. 26 July 2005 – Mumbai Floods
On 26 July 2005, Mumbai experienced extremely heavy rainfall, receiving around 944 mm in just 24 hours. Large parts of Mumbai and Maharashtra were flooded. Roads and railway lines were blocked, homes were damaged and thousands of people were stranded.
More than 1,000 people died across Maharashtra, including hundreds in Mumbai. The floods remain one of the most traumatic disasters in the city’s history.
5. 26 November 2008 – Mumbai Terror Attacks
On 26 November 2008, 10 terrorists carried out coordinated attacks across Mumbai. The attacks targeted locations including Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel and Nariman House, and continued for almost three days.
More than 160 people were killed and over 300 were injured. The date 26/11 remains permanently linked with one of the darkest periods in Mumbai’s history.
6. 26 August 2021 – Kabul Airport Attack
On 26 August 2021, a suicide bombing took place at Kabul Airport in Afghanistan, where thousands had gathered hoping to leave the country after the Taliban took control. The attack near Abbey Gate killed at least 182 people, including around 169 Afghan civilians and 13 U.S. soldiers. More than 150 people were injured.
ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the attack.
7. 26 August 2026 – Nepal-Tibet Floods
On 26 August 2026, devastating flash floods struck parts of Nepal, particularly around the Bhote Koshi River near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Floodwaters caused widespread destruction, damaging or sweeping away homes, roads, bridges and hydropower projects. Local people and foreign tourists were among those affected. The disaster was linked to a massive collapse of ice, rocks and debris in the Himalayan region, sending huge amounts of water and debris into the river system.
Several major tragedies have happened on the 26th, but whether this is a meaningful pattern or simply coincidence is another question.
