Yes the medals will be the usual Gold, Silver and Bronze but they will not be made of metal. These metals will be made out of 78,985 tons of recycled electronic gadgets like cell phones, laptops, handheld games and cameras. 6.21 million cell phones were recycled to make these medals. The recycled metal has been collected from the Japanese public as well as businesses and industry.

Their aim was to collect 30.3kg of metal for gold medals, 4,100kg of metal for silver and 2,700kg of metal for bronze. All additional metal that isn’t used for the Olympic medals will be used for medals in local sports events across Japan.Japan is planning various environment friendly ideas for the games. Tokyo 2020 will use household plastic and marine plastic waste to create podiums for the medal ceremonies and make Olympic Torch relay person’s uniform with recycled plastic bottles.
