Who are the Druze, and Why is Israel Attacking Syria?

Tensions rise as Israel launches airstrikes on Syria after Druze-Bedouin clashes, claiming to protect the Druze people, while the UN raises concerns over civilian harm.

CORRECTION: In the video, Benjamin Netanyahu was mistakenly referred to as the President of Israel. The correct designation is Prime Minister of Israel.

The war between Israel and Iran has ended, but Israel has now started fresh airstrikes on Syria.

On 15th and 16th July 2025, Israeli forces attacked southern Syria, especially areas like Sweida and Deraa. Israel also bombed the Syrian Army headquarters in Damascus, Hezbollah locations, and even the Syrian Presidential Palace.

Israel says these attacks are to “protect the Druze community” and to keep its border safe from weapons.

The Druze are a small religious community living in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. In Syria, they are only 3% of the total population. They do not allow people from other religions to convert to their community. Many Druze people also live in the Golan Heights, which is near Israel’s border.

Since Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa became President of Syria, minority groups like the Druze have been facing more problems. Recently, fights started between Druze and Bedouin communities in southern Syria and Golan Heights.

Israel’s President Benjamin Netanyahu said, “We are protecting the Druze people and destroying the gangs of the Syrian government.”

During the attack, Israeli airstrikes also hit the Syrian state TV building in Damascus. A viral video shows a news anchor running away during a live show when explosions hit the building.

Some videos on social media show Druze people putting Israeli flags on their homes to show support.

Syrian President al-Sharaa said, “We are not afraid of war. We will protect our people.”

The United Nations (UN) has raised concerns about civilian deaths and called for peace talks.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “We are very worried. We want the fighting to stop soon.”

Some news channels are also talking about Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption cases. In 2019, he was charged with bribery and fraud. His trial was stopped during these attacks due to “security reasons.”

Many people are now asking – is Netanyahu using these wars to avoid court cases and stay in power?

The situation remains tense, and the world is closely watching.
