Twin Boys Undergo Operation to Become Girls
Mayla Rezende and Sofia Albuquerck who were born as identical boys, have both decided to undergo gender transition surgery to become women.
Mayla Rezende and Sofia Albuquerck were born as identical twin boys. The twins, aged 19, grew up in a small town in south-eastern Brazil, but they both "never identified as boys." The two of them did everything together. During their childhood they were bullied, sexually harassed, and suffered violence. But they, however, said they always had the support of their family. Finally the two of them decided to undergo gender transition surgery. Dr. Jose Carlos Martins of Transgender Center Brazil has a private clinic located in the city of Blumenau, Brazil.
He said, “Twins deciding to change their gender together has never happened in the world. The surgeries on the twins happened a day apart and took 5 hours each.” A week after the surgery, the sisters shared their incredible journey in a video-conference interview. Mayla Rezende said she is currently studying medicine in Argentina. “"I always loved my body, but I did not like my genitalia. I would blow dandelion seeds into the air and wish for God to turn me into a girl. Now my wish has come true.” Their grandfather paid for their surgeries that cost 100,000 Brazilian reais (INR 1287696.18) by auctioning off one of his properties. Mara Lucia da Silva, their mother, said, "I don't even remember thinking of them as boys. To me, they were always girls," Albuquerck said, "Brazil is the most transphobic country in the world." Brazil is known for a strong machismo culture and rampant transphobia. Further, as many as 175 trans persons were murdered in Brazil in 2020.
