Thief Poses As Jain Priest Steals Gold From Temple

Police caught a man impersonating as a Jain priest and stealing gold and silver utensils from the Jain temple.

Dindoshi Police received a complaint on January 23 from a Jain priest, Dhiraj Lal Shah, who mentioned that a 160-gram gold plate, which he had taken to the temple for worship had gone missing. Swinging into action, the cops started the probe by scanning the CCTV footage of the temple and nearby areas but they were finding it difficult to track any suspicious person. After going through footage of more than 100 CCTVs, the police finally spotted Bharat Sukhraj Doshi, who was seen visiting several temples, while impersonating as a Jain priest. The accused was arrested by the police and a gold rod weighing 160 grams and a scooter, whose total value is around Rs 5.30 lakh have been recovered from his possession.

Doshi revealed that he used to watch Crime Patrol to plan his escape after a robbery. The accused used to gamble with the money received after selling the stolen temple articles. Dindoshi police officer Dhananjay Kawade said, "Previously, he had stolen some silver utensils from other Jain temples. But since the thefts were small, nobody filed a complaint. Doshi has confessed to taking inspiration from a Crime Patrol episode. To save himself, the accused used to dress and disguise himself as a member of the Jain community, wear a mask, did reiki on the pretext of worshiping at the temple, and stole precious articles. Later he used to gamble with the money received from selling the gold and silver articles to a shopkeeper.”
