Supreme Court Reviews Sabarimala Judgement

CJI Ranjan Gogoi has said that the Supreme Court will review the 2018 Sabarimala verdict and refer it to a larger bench of judges.

For hundreds of years, women, aged between 10 and 50, were not allowed to enter the famous Sabarimala temple. Many activists filed a case in the Supreme Court to tell the Sabarimala Temple to allow women inside. In September 2018, the Supreme Court’s former CJI Dipak Misra allowed women to enter the Sabarimala temple. Some were not at all happy with the SC decision and some were very happy. Many women even managed to enter the temple. However it was not easy and many people tried to stop them.

In 2018 when the SC announced their decision they said that banning women is the same as untouchability. In India everyone is equal and women must be allowed to enter. However yesterday the current CJI Ranjan Gogoi said that the decision to allow women inside Sabarimala has to be reviewed again. The CJI said that the SC has to review the case again to see if the Court is allowed to interfere in religious matters.
