Suicide Barriers to Be Installed on Navi Mumbai Bridge
Navi Mumbai police install suicide barriers on the Vashi bridge to prevent people from jumping off the bridge.
In 2015, 21 people jumped from the Suicide Barriers to Be Installed on Navi Mumbai Bridgeashi Bridge in Mumbai and only 15 people were rescued. In 2016 also, 15 people jumped off the bridge. 8 people died in 2017, after jumping from the bridge. This is the reason why, the Navi Mumbai Police has requested the Public Works Department [PWD] to install steel suicide barriers on the Vashi bridge.
Dr Suresh Kumar Mekal, joint commissioner of police in Navi Mumbai said that, they have been requesting the PWD for the suicide barrier for a long time, and finally they agreed. They are hoping the railings will be installed this year.
PWD officials said that the railing will be 1.86 km long. The barrier will be 9-feet tall. It will have a curve at the top, so that no one climbs up and tries to jump off the bridge. These barriers will be made of steel and will be installed along the railings of the old and new Vashi bridge. On the old bridge, the barrier will be installed only one side because of a gas pipe line which runs on the other side. The barriers will be designed in such a way that it makes the bridge look more beautiful.
In the past, the Navi Mumbai police had installed motivational banners on the bridge to change the mind people who wanted to commit suicide.
They even had a private security that kept a watch on the bridge. The Navi Mumbai police also kept a boat on stand by under the bridge to rescue people who jumped, but the fluctuating water levels made it very difficult to rescue people. Now hopefully, the bridge will prevent people from commiting suicide.
