Srilankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Emails His Resignation

In between the economic crisis happening in Sri Lanka, and the protests happening around the country President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who according to sources earlier escaped from the country on a naval ship had reached the Maldives and is now in Singapore. However Singapore maintains they are not giving him asylum and Rajapaksa is on a personal visit.  

On Saturday after landing in Singapore President Gotabaya Rajapaksa finally emailed his resignation to the speaker of the parliament after which the protestors were seen celebrating, dancing and bursting firecrackers.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is currently serving as the acting President, imposed an emergency. Wickremesinghe is also the acting President and has already told the Speaker to call on party leaders to name a new president together.

After Rajapaksa's resignation, the anti-government protesters announced to vacate some of the administrative buildings, including the President's house and the PM office, which they have been occupying since April 9 demanding Rajapaksa's resignation. Apart from Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the protesters have also demanded Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's resignation, However, no update on the resignation of the prime minister has been given yet. The people of Sri Lanka during all this are suffering with unbearable high prices on daily essentials, and suffering problems like shortage of food, fuel and other basic needs required for human survival.

There is a test series going on in Srilanka between Australia and Sri Lanka. During the match, mass protests swarmed the Galle ground. He added, “Chatting to some of the staff around the hotel and a couple of drivers. They are doing it really tough. They are having one day eating, one day off eating to try and feed their kids. It’s really tough.”
