A disturbing video of renowned Pakistani singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is going viral on social media.

In the viral video Khan is seen mercilessly repeatedly hitting and slapping a man with a slipper and asking him again & again “where is my bottle?”. The video is from a hotel room on the night of 27th January 2024.

The victim was later identified as Khan’s protege (student) named Naveed Hasnain. During the beating Hasnain fell on the ground but Khan did not stop hitting him. Hasnain kept saying that the bottle must be somewhere here itself and that he doesn’t know about the whereabouts of it but Khan continued to shout and beat him. After receiving multiple bashes, Hasnain admitted misplacing the bottle. Towards the end of the video, Khan is seen slapping Hasnain at the door and ordering him to go get his bottle. The video has sparked worldwide outrage and harsh criticism for Khan. The video received many many negative comments with some people questioning Khan’s authenticity and urging to boycott his music. In response to backlash, Khan uploaded a video clarifying his action the next day. In the video, Khan addressed his followers and audiences and said, “The videos you are seeing are a personal issue between an ustad and shagird (teacher and his disciple). He is like my son. This is how the relationship is between a teacher and his disciple. If a disciple does something good, I shower my love on him. If he does something wrong, he is punished.” Khan also revealed that he had apologized to the student after the incident. Then Khan allowed Hasnain to talk in the video to further justify his action. In the same video Hasnain revealed that the alleged bottle contained holy water blessed by a pir (religious cleric) who recited verses over it and was therefore very important & special to Khan. Hasnain also defended Khan’s action and said “He's like my father. He loves us a lot. Whoever spreads this video is trying to defame my ustad." Hasnain’s father also came forward to defend Khan by elaborating on the relationship between an ustad and shagird in the world of Qawwali. The video also featured Khan’s driver who assured that he has never been mistreated by Khan. Soon after this, Khan formally dismissed his PR agency - PME Entertainment. He accused the company of blackmailing him and of dishonest financial transactions. He also referred to the viral video as "recorded in secret" and "manipulated to tarnish the artist's reputation". But despite the clarification, many people are finding Khan’s act as disrespectful and inhuman. Many commented saying, "Violence cannot be justified" and a lot of fans are disappointed to realize that Khan might not be the man they thought he was.
