Roshni, a New App to Help the Blind

IIT Ropar in Punjab creates a new App called “Roshni” to help the blind.

On 23 January, the Indian Institute of Technology at Ropar in Punjab has created an Android app called “Roshni”. This App will help the blind, determine the value of the currency notes.

A professor at IIT Ropar said that, before the blind could determine the value of currency notes by the length and breadth of the notes. In India, new notes were introduced after Demonetisation. The size of the old and new currency notes are almost the same. This makes it difficult for the blind to determine the value of the notes.

The Roshni App will help the blind determine the value of the note. The user has the bring the currency note in front of the camera and the App will give a audio description regarding the details of the note.

The App has images of more than 13,000 currency notes. The App will be able to detect the pattern and the different features of the currency note and give the user the right details.

The Seeing AI App by Microsoft is another App that helps the blind know the difference between the old and new Indian notes.
