RBI: All Rs. 2000 Currency Notes Have Not Returned to Banks
As of January 1, 2024, 97.38% of ?2,000 banknotes have returned to the banking system, leaving around ?9,330 crore in public circulation.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a statement on 1st January 2024 claiming that nearly 97.38% of the ?2,000 bank notes have returned to the banking system. It also said that now only about ?9,330 crore in ?2,000 currency notes are still with the public. The process of ?2,000 notes being returned to the banks was started by the public after RBI announced its withdrawal from circulation on 19th May 2023. RBI had asked individuals, companies and organizations holding ?2,000 denominations to either exchange or deposit them in bank accounts by 30th September 2023. The deadline was later extended to 7th October 2023 after which deposit and exchange services at all private & public bank branches were discontinued. The statement also added that ? 2,000 bank notes continue to be legal tender. However from 8th October 2023, citizens have the choice of either exchanging the ? 2,000 notes or having the equivalent sum credited to their bank accounts at the 19 offices of the RBI. They can also send ? 2,000 bank notes through India Post from any post office to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts in India.

19. Thiruvananthapuram.
Since the publishing of the statement, queues are being witnessed during working hours at the RBI offices for exchange/deposit of ?2,000 notes.
