Rakhi Gift of Liver from Sisters Saves Brother’s Life

A 14-year-old boy, who was terminally ill with liver failure, has received a new lease of life, thanks to his two elder sisters.

A 14 year old boy named Akshat from Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, was suffering from major jaundice and his liver was failing. Doctors predicted that he would not live for long. His case was even more complicated as he was overweight and weighed 92kg. Dr Neelam Mohan, director, paediatric liver diseases and transplant Medanta Liver Transplant Institute said that Akshat had two elder sisters. Neha aged 29 and Prerna aged 22. However, since both the sisters weighed much less and so their livers weighed less as well. Since Akshat weighed 92 kg he would need a liver that was heavier. This is why doctors decided to take half a liver from each sister and transplant it into Akshat. The surgery was very complicated but it was completely successful and all three are recovering well. A doctor said that this shows that organ donation is very important. Even half a liver can save someone’s life and the procedure will not affect the donor.
