Protesting AIIMS Nurses Call Off Strike

On 14th December around 5,000 nurses of AIIMS went on an indefinite strike but after a meeting with authorities and a court order, they called off the strike.

On Monday 14th December around 5,000 nurses of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) went on an indefinite strike. Nurses had put forward 23 demands including asking for clarity on salary structure and a freeze on contract hiring. A spokesperson for the Nurses Union told NDTV that they had been pushing for the demands for a long time. The government had called them for a meeting last year and assured them a solution, but the government procrastinated. Hospital Director Dr Randeep Guleria said that the nurses are a part of the AIIMS family and appealed to them to rethink their strike. He said the administration would immediately hold several rounds of dialogues to resolve outstanding issues. He added, “The Health Ministry will also hold talks and try to resolve this as soon as possible.”

Even the Delhi High Court said they could not continue their strike. That's when the nurses called off the strike on Tuesday 15th December night. Guleria said, “I thank the entire nursing fraternity, who are all part of the AIIMS family, for listening to our appeal, to the court and also thinking about the plight of patients, especially during the pandemic, and calling off the strike and coming back to work.
