A massive earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, sending tremors across western Turkey as well as Greece on Friday 30th October. The tremors were felt in the cities of Athens, Greece, and Istanbul, Turkey as well. This earthquake was extremely strong. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1. Many tall buildings collapsed in the Turkish city of Izmir. In Izmir, people rushed out to the streets in panic when the quake hit. Images and videos on social media platforms showed seawater flooding the streets in Izmir causing a ‘mini tsunami’. On 1st November Turkey's disaster management department said the earthquake had killed 62 people in Turkey. At least 940 people have been injured, 218 of whom are still being treated at hospitals.
Rescue workers continue to search for survivors under the wreckage of eight buildings in the city of Izmir, in western Turkey. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said there was no clear number on how many people are still under the rubble. Hard to give a number. There is an estimation, but I cannot share it. Greek authorities have said that two teenagers, a boy, and a girl, died on Samos an Island in Greece after a wall collapsed on them.
