PM’s Convoy Gets New Mercedes Worth Rs 12 Crore

The Prime Minister's convoy has got a new Mercedes Maybach S 650 Guard which can withstanding blasts and bullets

The security detail of the Prime Minister, including the vehicles that are part of the convoy, is decided by the Special Protection Group (SPG). SPG is dedicated to providing security to the Prime Minister  and assessing the threat perception before choosing the vehicle. The SPG orders two identical cars and the second vehicle is used as a decoy. Over the years, multiple highly secure vehicles have been a part of Prime Minister's convoys, including a BMW 7-series, Range Rover Vogue and Land Cruiser. The latest addition to the convoy is the new car, Mercedes Maybach S 650 Guard. Sources said the vehicle was recently acquired as part of the PM’s convoy and the PM was first time seen using the vehicle during the two-day visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi on 6th December. An official said, “Security of the PM is a matter of consistent review. Vehicles are part of the process” Sources said the vehicle was acquired after several rounds of negotiations between the company and the SPG and some modifications were made to suit the needs of PM’s protection.

PM Modi's S650 Pullman Guard’s body and thick windows are capable of withstanding blasts and bullets from AK-47 rifles.It comes with a 2010 Explosion Proof Vehicle (ERV) rating and  its occupants are protected from a 15kg explosion from a distance of two meters. The vehicle is also equipped to cope with smoke or irritant gases or even a gas attack, when its emergency fresh air system would be switched on, protecting the occupant inside. The car has a self-sealing fuel tank and comes with an in-built fire extinguisher. The seats come with a massage function where the passenger can avail of massages. It also has a 360 degree camera.
