People Unhappy With Delhi Police Stopping Artists in Public

In a viral video that shows a police officer asking an artist to stop playing in a public place as a large crowd watches the confrontation between the artist and the cop.

India as a country is filled with talent, be it from a roadside beggar to artists and performers which are not yet viral. However, with such a large population and so many talents around it becomes really difficult for everyone to get an opportunity to perform and people find different ways to platforms to showcase their talent in a hope to get viral someday. However, in India, often these people are accused of encroaching on public places. Something similar was seen in a video that shows a police officer asking an artist to stop playing in a public place as a large crowd watches the confrontation between the artist and the cop. By the looks of it, it appears that the incident took place in Delhi’s Connaught Place.

Actor Rajesh Tailang shared this video on Twitter and wrote, “Watched this clip on Instagram. @DelhiPolice this is not done. These artists make our Delhi more aesthetical, musical. Shame !!!”.This clip gathered over two lakh views since it was posted on 4th January 2023.  Commenting on it a Twitter user wrote, “Delhi police are very proactive when they want to be. How about being proactive about women’s safety? And checking if drivers are drunk? And ensuring everyone is safe? No need to be a bully whilst doing your job. Wonder how they are being trained.”“So many cities across the world have artists playing up on the streets and they are appreciated and never bothered by the Govt. Authorities or Police. Sadly, in India all the restrictions are imposed on common man or artists and not on politicians spewing venom in Public. Shame!" wrote a user. Another person wrote, “They’re much better than beggars. They make our street journey enjoyable. We shouldn’t treat them like this. Chances are high that these are non-income source unlike beggars."

Contrary to this view, another person remarked, “Busking (playing music on the street) should be license-based. Before you quote Europe on this, you have to take a license and apply for a time slot for a particular spot in Europe. Artists just coming up to a spot and gathering crowd attention is just a menace for the rest of the crowd and law & order.” What do you think about this? Do you think such artists should be allowed to perform in public without any restrictions? Do mention your opinions about the same in the comment section below.
