Everyone remembers dipping the Parle-G biscuits in a steaming hot cup of tea and quickly biting off the tea-soaked half before it crumbles into the cup. Many people would have done the same during the lockdown to soothe their worries. This Rs. 5/- pack biscuit was useful for many migrants who walked hundreds of kilometres to get back home. Many people stocked their kitchen cabinets with Parle-Gs, many kind people distributed sacks of them to the needy.
Parle-G has been a household brand since 1938. It achieved a unique milestone of selling the maximum number of biscuits during the lockdown. Parle Products, the makers of Parle-G brand, did not share the details of the sales numbers, but they said that March, April & May have been their best months in eight decades. Biscuit makers like Parle started working within a very short period after the lockdown on 24th March. Some of these companies also arranged transport for their workers for an easier and safer commute to work. Parle Products focused on producing its best selling but low-value Parle-G brand as it envisaged massive demand from all its customer groups. The company also rearranged its distribution ways within a week to make sure that the product is available at retail outlets.

Mayank Shah category head at Parle Products said, “Many state governments requested us for biscuits and they were in constant touch with us, asking about our stocks. Several NGOs bought humongous quantities from us. We were lucky to have restarted production from 25th March onwards.”In normal times, Parle Products makes close to 400 million Parle-G biscuits every day. There are several fun trivia around this mammoth number. The distance between the earth and the moon can be covered if a month’s production of Parle-G biscuits is stacked side by side. If you line up all the Parle-G biscuits consumed annually end-to-end, it can go around the earth 192 times!
