Palghar Fisherman Sell Ghol Fish for Rs 1.33 Crore

A group of fishermen are in for a treat, as they catch fish worth Rs. 1.33 crore

Due to monsoons in Maharashtra, there was a month long ban on fishing. The fishermen were in for a surprise when they got to know that they had caught Rs. 1.33 crores worth of fish, on the first day of fishing after the ban

Chandrakant Tare is a fisherman from Palghar. Along with 8 of his co fishermen, they went out to fish on the evening of August 28. They were in their boat “Harba Devi” and went to Wadhwan, which is around 25 nautical miles away.

Tare and his team never imagined that this fishing trip would change their lives. They caught 157 Ghol fish. Ghol fish is also known as “Sea Gold”. It has high medicinal use, and is in great demand in countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan.

Once they came back to land, Tare and his team auctioned the fish in Murbe, in Palghar. The entire stock was bought by traders from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, for Rs. 1.33 crore.

Due to pollution, such fishes are very rare in the area. Fishermen have to go far out into the sea to get a good catch.

The scientific name of the Ghol fish is “Protonibea Diacanthus”. It is used to make cosmetics, medicines, to make thread for surgeries which then slowly dissolve etc.

Every part of the fish is valuable for medicinal and other purposes.
