Pakistan: Hindu Girl Killed For Refusing Conversion & Marriage

A Hindu girl was murdered for declining a marriage proposal in the Sukkur district of Sindh, a province in Pakistan.

In India the majority of the people are Hindus. We have a lot of minority communities like Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, etc. We have laws to protect the rights of these minorities. In Pakistan, the majority is Muslim while hindus are a minority. Sindh area in Pakistan has the highest number of Hindus in Pakistan. However, atrocities like hate, torture, abductions, rapes, forced coversions, forced marriages and murder against Hindus have surged.

In 2019, a bill was proposed in Pakistan’s parliament that said that forceful conversions of any person should not be allowed. However, it was never passed and the minorities still suffer the consequences.

According to the People's Commission for Minority Rights and the Center for Social Justice, 156 cases of forced conversion were reported between 2013 and 2019 in Pakistan. There has been a similar case of atrocities against Hindus in Pakistan

In Sukkur district of Sindh province in Pakistan, there was an 18 year old Hindu girl named Pooja Kumari. A man named Wahid Bux Lashari, wanted to convert Pooja to Islam and then marry her. But Pooja did not agree to the conversion and the marriage and resisted his advances. After Pooja refused, Wahid broke into her house to kidnap her. When she resisted the abduction, he fired on her. In the firing Pooja was killed.

According to police, the accused Wahid has been arrested and has confessed his crime. However, reports indicate that many men were involved in the abduction attempt, and it is not clear if the other suspects have been identified and arrested. Local media reported that Pooja's relatives protested against the brutal murder by staging a dharna and demanded harsh punishment for the accused.

People on social media, including Pakistani citizens, came out in support of the family and joined the protest, with the hashtag "#JusticeForPoojaKumari" trending on Twitter
