Heavy rainfall in major onion growing districts in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh has damaged many onion crops. This led to a shortage of onions, causing a sharp increase in onion prices. In the last 10 days, the price of onions has increased by Rs 10/kg. Now the price of onion is Rs 100/kg in some markets of Mumbai and Pune. The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs said, “To increase the supply of onions in India, the government relaxed some import rules till 15th December 2020 so that onions can be imported in the country.” Indian High Commissions in various countries across the world have been instructed to contact onion traders and convince them to import onions to India. The government also keeps a ‘Buffer Stock’ of onions. This stock is kept aside to be used in case of an emergency. The government has released such stock so that onions are available in the market and the price reduces. Earlier on 14th September, the government had banned the export of onions to prevent a shortage in Indian markets.
