Olympic Medallist Mirabai Chanu Joins Manipur Police

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who earned a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was inducted into the Manipur Police.

Chanu Saikhom Mirabai, who belongs to Nongpok Kakching village in Manipur’s Imphal district. She comes from a family that has no background in sports. Her father was a government employee, while her mother sold samosas on the streets. Chanu’s talent was recognised early on by Angom Anita Chanu, a former international weightlifter and coach, and she went on to train at the sports academy in Manipur. She went on to win many medals in Commonwealth Games, World Weightlifting Championships and other championships. Mirabai made history last year by winning India’s first-ever Olympic silver medal in weightlifting in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  After the Olympic feat, she was offered the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP - sports) job by the Manipur government. Based on the offer, she has now taken charge as the ASP in the Manipur Police. In a series of tweets she expressed gratitude to her parents as well as Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. She said it's an honour for her to be appointed ASP (Sports) in the Manipur Police. Chanu also met Biren Singh. Following the meeting, Singh described Chanu as “our nation’s pride”.
