In the UK the government has already started COVID-19 vaccinations. Health Secretary Matt Hancock in the House of Commons announced that the UK government has imposed the strictest lockdown in the country.

People will not be allowed to socialize indoors starting Wednesday. In addition, bars, pubs, restaurants, and eateries will remain closed with the exception of takeout. Hancock said the decision was taken because there has been a "very sharp" spike in COVID-19 cases in Greater London, Kent and Essex caused by a new variant of the coronavirus.

The new coronavirus is spreading fast and the cases are doublings in some areas every 7 days. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said adding that "swift and decisive action" is the need of the hour. He said, “We have currently identified over 1,000 cases with this new coronavirus predominantly in the south of England. These cases have been identified in nearly 60 different local authority areas." The World Health Organisation (WHO) said they are aware of the news coronavirus. However, neither British authorities nor the WHO said whether the new strain of the coronavirus would respond to the vaccine or not.
