The Mumbai Traffic Police recently issued a notification that announced that helmets will now be compulsory for back seat riders.

If you are a Mumbaikar and are travelling in the city with a bike, this news is for you! The Mumbai Traffic Police recently issued a notification that announced that helmets will now be compulsory for back seat riders. The police are not starting this rule immediately. This rule will be effective from June 9. As per reports, wearing a helmet has always been compulsory for pillion riders under the Motor Vehicle Act, however was not being followed strictly. Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey stated that this rule is already being followed in the entire world and several cities in India as well.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raj Tilak Roshan said, “We analyzed recent data of two-wheeler related accidents and found that in almost all cases, the pillion riders suffered injuries. Making helmets mandatory will make it the responsibility of the pillion riders and will contribute towards a decrease in injuries in accidents.” The Deputy Commissioner has also said that enforcing this rule is the responsibility of traffic police personnel. Also, they can ask for help from the police station personnel whenever needed.

At present, the traffic police impose a fine of ? 500 on helmet-less riders or suspend their licenses. After 15 days, the same penalty will be imposed on pillion riders found without helmets  along with the suspension of their driving license for three months.

Most of the people welcomed this decision. However there were some who also said that it is a good initiative, but we also need to consider improving road conditions and helmet quality. People should stop buying helmets from roadside shops instead of buying them from reputed dealerships.
