Mayawati Ordered to Pay Back the Government

The Chief Justice of India orders Mayawati to pay back the government the crores of Rupees she spent on statues in Lucknow and Noida.

Mayawati was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2007-2012. During that period, she spent crores of rupees from the financial budget for the state of UP. She used this money to build statues of herself, a Leader named Kanshi Ram and statues of elephants, in Lucknow and Noida.

In 2009 a petition filed by a lawyer named Kant, demanded the government to investigate this matter. In response to this petition the Chief Justice of India (CJI) said that, Mayawati has to pay back the government all the money she spent. The CJI has not passed the order yet. He has given her time to defend herself at the hearing in April.

Mayawati’s lawyer tried to convince the CJI to postpone the hearing, because it clashed with the general election. However the CJI did not agree. The petitioner has said that it was immoral of Mayawati to spend money on statues in a economically backward.
