Manipur Government Refused to Help Myanmar Refugees
The Manipur government had issued a letter to local authorities that they must not offer food and shelter to refugees from Myanmar and people trying to seek refuge should be politely turned away.
There is a huge problem going on in Myanmar as the military removed the government, arrested leader Aung San Suu Kyi and imposed military rule in the country. Because of this people of Myanmar have been protesting against the military demanding them to reinstate the democratically elected government. More than 420 people have died. On 26th March the military openly fired at protesting citizens at 9 places in myanmar. Around 90 people died. Because of the military’s violence, many people are leaving Myanmar and entering India through Manipur.
The Manipur government had issued a letter to local authorities that they must not offer food and shelter to refugees from Myanmar. The letter had also said, "People trying to enter/seek refuge should be politely turned away.” People on social media severely criticised the Manipur Government. People said the order was inhumane and is against India’s culture of hospitality. The government then sent another letter saying that their previous letter was misunderstood. The government is helping refugees and taking them to Manipur’s capital Imphal for treatment. Around 1,000 refugees have entered Mizoram from Myanmar. The Mizoram government is helping all the refugees.
A day after this violence in Myanmar on 26th March, on 27th March Myanmar’s military conducted a military parade where India had sent a military representative to attend the programme. When news about the representative attending the parade spread on the internet, many Indian said India was wrong to attend such an event when their military is treating its citizens so badly.
