Maharashtra Increases Electricity by 10p/Unit

Maharashtra state government increased tax on electricity to provide solar water pumps to farmers.

The Maharashtra state government has increased the tax on electricity for the consumers of BEST, Adani, and Tata Power. They have increased the tax by 10 paise per unit. For the residential electricity consumers, the state government has increased the tax on electricity from 16.04 paise per unit  to 26.04 paise per unit. For the commercial users, the state has increased the tax on electricity from 24.04 paise per unit to 34.04 paise per unit.

The Mahavitaran is the state government’s electricity distribution company. They have also increased tax on commercial consumers but the the tax for the residential consumers is the same. The Mahavitaran charges farmers and people who are below poverty line, a very small amount for electricity. Instead of Rs 6 per unit, they are charged only Rs 1.50 per unit.

The government’s decision to increase tax on electricity, will help the state support the farmers and people below the poverty line. By increasing the tax, the state government is going to earn Rs 1,100 crore.

The state government has increased the tax on electricity, so that it has the money to provide solar-powered water pumps to farmers. The solar-powered water pump project is expected to cost Rs 1,700 crore.
