Leopard Cub Found in Passenger’s Bag at Chennai Airport

A man who had just arrived from Thailand, tried to smuggle a female leopard in his luggage.

2 February 2019, Kaha Moideen,45, landed at Chennai airport from Thailand.In the airport a customs officer stopped him for a random security check.

While frisking] him, they heard muffled cries come from his bag. When he opened the bag they found a leopard cub in a pink plastic basket.  The cub was in a state of shock and was making a lot of noise.

The custom officers immediately informed the forest department officials, who rushed to the airport. They confirmed that it was a female leopard cub. She was 54 cms in length and weighed 1.1 kg.

The forest department arrested the man. Action will be taken against him under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

The leopard cub is in the custody of the forest department.
